Top Signs It's Time To Replace The Outboard Motor On Your Boat

Recreation & Sports Blog

The outboard motor that is attached to your boat is undoubtedly one of the most important parts of the entire vessel. Outboard motors are singular units that contain the engine, propeller, and gearbox, each of these playing a critical role in the movement of the boat. Because the outboard motor is situated outside of the interior portions of the boat, you may think it would be rather easy to tell when there is a problem. However, this is not always the case. If you begin to notice any of the following signs, it could mean it's time to replace your outboard motor.

Pay Attention To Unusual Noises

Although your outboard motor is bound to emit a buzzing sound while you are operating the boat, the noise should not be excessive. If you've had your boat for some time, you are probably used to the mild hum you hear each time you crank up the engine for a day out on the water. But, things begin to change drastically when the motor is starting to give out. The sounds you hear could get so loud that you are unable to carry on a normal conversation.

When the noise gets out of control, it's best to act before the situation worsens. The last thing you would want to do is take your boat hours away from the shoreline, only for the outboard motor to completely break down. This is a dangerous and scary scenario that could expose you to risks you definitely need to avoid.

Overheating & Vibrations Become A Problem

The typical vibrations you feel while steering your boat shouldn't be cause for alarm. It's just an indication that power is being used to fuel the outboard motor so you experience movement. However, if the vibrations intensify and you find that it's hard to stand or walk because the flooring seems to be jumping much more than usual, this could mean that your outboard motor has serious issues.

Also, overheating is another sign to look for when you are trying to gauge the condition of your motor. If the outboard motor is overly hot or if it starts to smoke, it's time to take action!

Protect your safety so that you always enjoy your time on the water. When these symptoms appear, head to a recreation and sports center to get a replacement for your outboard motor right away.
