Tips For Making Sure You Get The Birds You're Hunting For

Recreation & Sports Blog

Especially if you're new to duck hunting, knowing how to find them is important. Scouting is one of the most vital parts of the duck hunting process, so if it isn't done right, you're not going to have anything to shoot at. Here are a few tips to help you plan your scouting steps out to ensure that you know exactly where you need to be, and when you need to be there.

Start Scouting Early

One of the first things you should think about is starting the scouting process much earlier than you'd expect. You may think that, with bird season in the fall, you won't need to worry about scouting until you approach the end of summer, but the truth is that the earlier you start, the easier it is to identify patterns and know where to look come active season. Begin your scouting in the early spring and track them throughout the spring and summer to identify where they'll be in the fall.

Use Technology To Your Advantage

Smartphones come with all kinds of great resources to help hunters, and it's in your best interest to make sure that you're using it to your advantage. From satellite imagery to bird migration apps and tracking tools, there are many ways to simplify the process and keep a solid track of where the birds are going. That way, you can even automate the migration pattern to predict where they'll be during the fall hunting season.

In addition, you can often mark your maps with the areas where you've hunted before and had good luck. That way, you'll know what areas to frequent first, in case those are a part of their normal habitat.

Be In Several Places At Once

One of the best ways to track birds early in the season is through the use of field cameras. When you set up field cameras in the areas where you expect to see them, you can be in multiple places at once. That way, you'll be able to see what's going on in many places instead of just the one that you're in at the moment. Set them up so that they record digitally and transmit to the cloud, then you can watch them from anywhere, maybe even from your smartphone while you're out there looking around.

These are a few tips to help you capitalize on your bird hunting season. The sooner you start and the more tools you use to your advantage, the better chance you have of getting the birds you're hoping for this year.
